Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy (also known as Photobiomodulation, LED Therapy, or Low-Level Light Therapy) is a non-invasive therapeutic modality that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to stimulate cellular function and support natural healing processes throughout the body. Unlike heat-producing lasers or UV light, therapeutic red and NIR wavelengths safely penetrate tissues to interact with cells at the mitochondrial level.

How it Works

Red Light Therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that gently penetrate the skin and underlying tissues. These light wavelengths are absorbed by your cells and help support how they produce energy.

Inside each cell are structures called mitochondria — often referred to as the cell’s “power source.” When red and near-infrared light reach these mitochondria, it helps them work more efficiently. This can support your body’s natural repair processes, improve circulation, and help calm inflammation in the tissues.

Different wavelengths reach different depths in the body:

  • Red light works closer to the surface and supports skin health and circulation.

  • Near-infrared light penetrates deeper into muscles, joints, and connective tissue, where it may help support muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and ease stiffness.

Red Light Therapy does not produce heat or damage the skin. Instead, it works by encouraging your body’s own healing responses. When used alongside massage therapy or other hands-on treatments, it can help create a healthier environment for tissues to relax, recover, and respond to care.

Clinical Benefits

🟢 Musculoskeletal Recovery & Pain Modulation

  • Assist in reducing muscle soreness after activity

  • Support recovery from overuse and soft tissue irritation

  • Aid in managing joint discomfort and stiffness by modulating inflammatory signaling

🟢 Tissue Repair & Healing Support

  • Enhanced cellular energy production may support recovery from minor strains and tissue stress

  • May aid in circulation and microvascular support to promote nutrient delivery to tissues

🟢 Reduction of Inflammation & Muscle Tension

  • Light-initiated cellular responses can help reduce localized inflammation and promote relaxation of tight muscles

🟢 Support for Skin & Superficial Tissue Health

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis in superficial tissues

  • May support skin integrity adjacent to treated areas

Because red light therapy enhances natural cellular processes — rather than masking symptoms — it complements hands-on manual therapies by encouraging a healthier internal environment that may support tissue responsiveness during massage and other treatments.

What to Expect

20 Minute Full Body Red Light Therapy session using a combination of 8 unique wavelength LED diodes. Used to promote cellular functions, reduce inflammation, increase circulation, speed recovery from injury, increase collagen production, and improve mental wellbeing.

Treatments include 10 minutes on the front of the body and 10 minutes on the back, with eye protection provided. Sessions are gentle, relaxing, and require no recovery time. Red Light Therapy can be enjoyed on its own or added to any existing service.

Contraindications & Precautions

Red Light Therapy is generally considered safe and well tolerated for most people. However, it may not be appropriate in certain situations. Please inform your therapist if any of the following apply to you:

Red Light Therapy may not be recommended if you:

  • Are pregnant (particularly over the abdomen or lower back)

  • Have a known photosensitivity or light-sensitive condition

  • Are taking photosensitizing medications (such as certain antibiotics, acne medications, or chemotherapy drugs)

  • Have active cancer or are undergoing active cancer treatment, unless cleared by your healthcare provider

  • Have a history of seizures triggered by light

  • Have active skin infections, open wounds, or unhealed surgical sites in the treatment area

  • Have recently had injections or surgical procedures in the area being treated
